April 08 RIBBON JUDGING prepared by Gin Gan

Judging Categories:
Sometimes it is confusing where to put a display plant.  Here is some help.

Is my cattleya alliance plant a Miniature or a Standard?
Standard: Total height of plant greater than 12 inches excluding inflorescence.
Miniature: Total height of plant 12 inches or less excluding inflorescence.

Is my cymbidium plant a Miniature or a Standard?
Standard: Flowers 3 inches or larger.
Miniature: Flowers 3 inches or less.

Is my phalaenopsis alliance plant a Miniature or a Standard?
Standard:  Flower spike is greater than 10 inches in length.
Miniature: Flower spike is 10 inches in length or less.

Do you know . . . what genera and hybrids belong to the Cattleya Alliance (Laeliinae)? Here are a few with their abbreviations: Barkeria (Bark), Brassavola (B), Brassocattleya (Bc), Brassolaelia (Bl), Brassolaeliocattleya (Blc) Broughtonia (Bro), Cattleya (C), Cattleytonia (Ctna), Clarkeara (Clka), Diacrium (Diacm), Dialaelia (Dial), Encyclia (E), Epidendrum (Epi), Isabelia ((Isa), Iwanagaara (Iwan), Laelia (L), Laeliocattleya (Lc), Oerstedella (Oe), Otaara (Otr), Potinara (Pot), Rhyncholaelia (Rl), Shomburgkia (Schom), Sophrocattleya (Sc), Sophrolaeliocattleya (Slc), Sophronitis (S), Yamadaara (Yam)

Of course there are many more. You also may wish to know which are hybrids and what genera have been crossed to get the hybrid. One place to go on the web for this information is http://retirees.uwaterloo.ca/~jerry/orchids/index.html On that site, check out Names of Orchid Genera and their Hybrids and Intergeneric Orchid Genus Names. Each file can be downloaded in MS Word format, so you can have the information ready at hand. No computer? Go to your local library.

SGVOH Ribbon Judging Guidelines

Members have been bringing lots of beautiful plants.  You should know you have two places the display your plants:

(1) If the plant has been owned for 6 months or more, the plant can be put on the Judging Display Tables.

(2) If the plant has been owned for less than 6 months, it may be displayed on the New Arrivals Display Tables.  These plants will not be judged, but the owner will receive a raffle ticket for each plant displayed here.

Any member who has grown their plants for longer than 6 months and would like to display them on the New Arrivals Table is welcome to do so.

Any plant that was awarded a Ribbon should not be brought back for judging until it blooms again.
